About Lingala
Lingala (Lingála) is a Bantu language spoken by over 20 million people, primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Republic of Congo, and parts of Angola, Central African Republic, and South Sudan. It is one of the four national languages of the DRC and serves as the most widely understood lingua franca across the country, especially in Kinshasa.
Lingala is has one of the more accessible Bantu languages. The main challenges are that:
- it is a tonal language (tone changes meaning)
- Verb conjugation follows Bantu patterns unfamiliar to English/French speakers

This is important because everyday street Lingala has absorbed many French loanwords that dilute its genuine vocabulary.
